The Environment of Madagascar
Climate: The climate of Madagascar is tropical around the coasts. Inland, it's more temperate. In the south it is arid. Madagascar has two seasons, a hot, rainy season from November to April, and a cooler dry season from May to October. The climate is extremely varied on the island.
Vegetation: The vegetation in Madagascar is very unique. It has been described as an "alternate world". They have plants that are non existent in any other part of the world. There are many rain forests filled with exotic vegetation. The country has some 900 species of orchids. Bananas, mangoes, coconut, vanilla, and other tropical plants grow on the coasts, and the eucalyptus tree, brought from Australia, is widespread.
Terrain: There are narrow coastal plains surrounding the island. There are lagoons and beaches throughout the coast. Inland, there are high plateaus and mountains. within these plateaus and mountains are everything from marshes to extinct volcanoes to old, eroded hills.
