About Madagascar
Name:
Madagascar's official name is Repoblikan’i Madagasikara in their national language of Malagasy. In French, their secondary language, it translates to République de Madagascar. In their tertiary language, English, this means Republic of Madagascar. People from Madagascar are known as Malagasy (singular and plural).
Location: Madagascar is located just off the south east coast of Africa. It's absolute location is 18 degrees south, 46 degrees east.
Major Cities:
Antananarivo (formerly known as Tananarive) is the capital of Madagascar. It was founded in the 17th century as the capital for the Hova chiefs. Antananarivo is built on a hill with avenues and staircases leading up to the peak, where on a rocky ridge, lies the Royal Estate.
Another major city is Toamasina, commonly known as Tamatave. This is the largest port in Madagascar and therefore the primary trading location. In 1927 the town was destroyed by a hurricane, but was rebuilt after. The seas off of Tamatave are harsh; they are extremely polluted and infested with sharks.
