Reserved Land in Madagascar
Historically, only about 3% of Madagascar's land has been protected. In 2003, the president pledged to triple the amount of land protected to about 10% over the coming 5 years. This was extremely important to the enviroment of Madagascar. In the past, Madagascar had been completely covered by forests. Almost 90% of its original forest had been either cut down for lumber, burned for coal, cleared for land, or uprooted and illegally sold. Sure, all these things produced income for the country, but they were all planned very short term and soon they would have none of their gorgeous wildlife left. It is important that Madagascar develops a new approach that includes the big picture in its planning. Now, there are many stunning national parks fro tourists to visit and enjoy!
